Don't Shout About Your Favourite Sites Just Yell - 16 February 2000

The Yell UK Web Awards 2000 - the ‘people’s choice’ of the best of the net - launch today with three new categories in recognition of the vital link between business and the internet. Cast your nomination by simply visiting www.yell.com.

The Awards were launched five years ago to applaud the wealth of creativity and originality within the UK internet industry.

John Condron, Managing Director of the Yellow Pages Group said: "We’re all part of the most exciting and colourful business revolution there has ever been. The Yell Awards give us the opportunity to applaud the ingenuity and creativity that is so much a part of that revolution, and that adds so much value and pleasure to our use of the internet. Anyone and everyone who uses the internet can vote; so, whether it’s a site you find crucial for your business, an ISP you value, or your local community site - just Yell and make your vote count".

Patricia Hewitt, Minister for Small Business and E-commerce, commented: "The Internet is going to be as essential to business as the telephone. As the Government’s first e-commerce minister, I am determined to make the UK the best place world-wide to do business electronically. Every business, large and small, needs to exploit the internet for business to business and business to consumer dealings. I hope we’ll see thousands of outstanding entries for the Yell Awards this year".

Nominations will be judged by a panel of experts from the hardware and software sections of the industry as well as leading marketing and internet journalists. Criteria considered will include depth of information and its relevance to visitors, ease of navigation, functionality, topicality of information and levels of interaction on the site. All winners will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Jonathon Ross on 11 July at the London Studios.

Last year’s winners include www.lastminute.com and www.cartoon-network.co.uk. Martha Lane Fox, founder of www.lastminute.com, commented: "With the company under a year old it was a great honour to win the award and a huge boost to the team who worked so hard".
